If you normally have a problem with low blood sugar, this can be exacerbated during a pregnancy. A low carb diet during pregnancy can actually help to regulate your blood sugar levels. If you develop gestational diabetes during the later months of your pregnancy, your doctor might actually ask you to cut back on carbohydrate intake to help regulate this imbalance as well.

Talk to your Doctor about a Low Carb Diet during Pregnancy

If you are interested in possibly sticking with a variation of your low carb diet during your pregnancy, you should talk to your doctor about the safety of this plan. Many of the low carb programs like the Atkins and South Beach diets will recommend that you increase your carb intake somewhat during the course of your pregnancy. For example, the Atkins program suggests that if you become pregnant, you move immediately to the maintenance phase of the plan where carbs are more abundant.

If you are following a particular program, do your research to learn what that program recommends before talking to your doctor. And keep in mind, that the most important consideration during your pregnancy is the health of you and your baby. If you were following a low carb diet before your pregnancy as a part of your weight loss plan, you will be able to return to your program once your baby is born.

When Loud Snoring Becomes Dangerous

Filed Under (Info) by admin on 25-04-2009

Loud snoring is frustrating and annoying. It may even cause social distress, such as when the snorer worries about having to share a room with a colleague on a business trip, or when a romantic partner moves out of the bedroom due to the noise.

Most people, however, while they acknowledge that loud snoring is not desirable, do not think of it as something particularly dangerous.

Loud snoring, however, can be a symptom of a serious condition known as obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Loud snoring occurs when the airway passages in the throat are partially blocked by tissue. The air vibrating against the tissue is what causes the snoring sound. Obstructive sleep apnea, on the other hand, occurs when the airway passages in the throat become completely blocked, causing the snorer to stop breathing for a few seconds.

When breathing stops, the snorer awakens enough to change position and start breathing again. People who suffer from sleep apnea may wake up dozens or even hundreds of times in one night. Untreated sleep apnea may lead to more serious problems such as cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, etc. It is also probably also responsible for countless automobile accidents as the sleep-impaired snorer drifts off behind the wheel.

Loud Snoring Vs. Sleep Apnea

Loud snoring is one symptom of sleep apnea. But just because a person snores loudly does not necessarily mean he or she has to have sleep apnea. Some loud snoring is simply plain, uncomplicated snoring: annoying and irritating, perhaps, but not at all dangerous.

To tentatively diagnose sleep apnea, one must be on the lookout for other signs and symptoms. For instance, in addition to loud snoring, does the snorer sometimes stop breathing at night? Does he or she awaken a state of panic only to fall back to sleep a few moments later?

If you don’t have a partner, there are other ways you can evaluate yourself for symptoms of sleep apnea. Chances are, you won’t remember waking up at night, so you may need to think about other symptoms. For instance, when you awaken from a full night’s sleep (at least eight hours), how do you feel? Refreshed, or exhausted? Are you drowsy during the day? Do you have headaches when you wake up? Do you wake up sweating?

If you have any of these symptoms, make an appointment to talk to your doctor. He or she will probably recommend a sleep study. If you do have sleep apnea, your doctor will prescribe a C-PAP machine which provides constant, gentle air pressure during sleep to keep the airway from becoming blocked.

Not all loud snoring is serious, but if you do snore loudly, keep an eye out for this all-too common complication.

Lindt Chocolate- The Swiss Chocolate Standard

Filed Under (Info) by admin on 21-04-2009

History

The Lindt Chocolate Companies history is set in 1845 Switzerland, where a father and son began making regionally famous chocolates. When the father died he passed his mini empire to his two sons, on received the retail stores, the other the factory; the son who inherited the factory acquired another famous confectioners factory, that famous confectioner was Rudolph Lindt.

The son was able to use Lindt’s recipes and keep the famous name as well; the company grew and changed hands, but the quality of chocolate never changed. Even during the World Wars, while demand was low due to financial hardships, consumers still demanded only the finest quality when they did indulge in their tasty treats. After the World Wars, as consumer demand grew, so did Lindt Chocolates; expanding to have a manufacturing plant and/or distribution center on most continents.

The Chocolate Process

Lindt’s chocolate producers monitor every aspect of their chocolates process, from the beans to melt in your mouth, quality is the priority to the company. Lindt Chocolate Company only chooses the finest quality coco beans from the Crillo tree; only ten percent of all coco beans in the worlds market, come from these types of trees. Once the beans are harvested they are fermented, dried, and shipped. Once at the factory the coco beans are carefully roasted, cleaned, and pre-crushed; Lindt doesn’t allow even a spare dust particle to contaminate their chocolate, they have a very strict quality requirements.

After the beans have been partially crushed, they are ground into a fine paste, this paste is further refined into two parts; coco butter and coco powder. The coco butter and coco powder are separately refined; the coco butter is purified and the coco powder is sifted to the perfect consistency. The coco butter and powder are rejoined in specific amounts to create different varieties of chocolate; dark chocolate: coco butter, coco powder, and sugar. White chocolate only has the coco butter mixed with other ingredients, and milk chocolate as the name suggests contains milk as well as sugar, coco powder, and coco butter.

Before any Lindt chocolate will meet their strict quality standards, the mixture must be rolled, conched , and tempered. The rolling compresses the particles of sugar and coco, making the chocolate paste even smoother; but this is only the first step in the process of making their ultra fine texture. Next they use a special machine which has troughs they call conches, these conches heat the chocolate paste to 80 degrees Celsius and stir it continually for 2-3 days until the perfect texture is achieved. The chocolate is then gently cooled and tempered to just above 30 degrees Celsius.

Lindt’s Selection

Lindt’s Chocolate offers many ways to enjoy their gourmet chocolates; truffles, bar chocolate, and pralines (filled chocolates). The truffles are available in several tempting flavors including: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate and hazel nut or peanut butter filled. Their chocolate bars have over 20 flavors, some that are familiar such as milk chocolate, some that are exotic such as pear, and some that are luxurious such as 99% cocoa. They also offer a sampler kit that allows for sets of six or twelve bars to be ordered and customized with any variety of the 20 plus, flavors. Lindt Chocolate Company also offers seasonal items that may be ordered for all special occasions.
